Lifeguard Instructor I – Casuals

 

The District of Summerland is seeking qualified Lifeguard Instructor I – Casuals to provide lifeguarding and aquatic instruction at the Summerland Aquatic & Fitness Centre. Interested applicants should enjoy working with the public, can adapt to an ever-changing work environment to meet the demands of the job, and have a flexible schedule. All required certifications must be current, and copies of certifications will be required. Please note your availability in your cover letter.

The ideal candidates will be dependable, motivated, team-players with a positive attitude and excellent communication and customer service skills. They must also be a strong swimmer, in excellent physical condition and have the ability to effectively control large groups of people of all ages. The successful candidates will be required to work a minimum of 10 hours per season in the spring (March break to end of June), fall (September to December) and winter (January to March break) to stay current in procedures, equipment and lifeguarding. No hours are required for July and August at this time.

 

The shift schedule is varied and may include hours between 5:45am – 10:00pm weekdays and 7:30am through 9:00pm on weekends. This is a union position (CUPE 1136) and the hourly wage is $27.37 plus 15% in lieu of benefits (may be subject to probation scale).

We are looking for individuals who are customer service oriented, and have a demonstrated track record for implementing aquatic procedures & policies and standards.

Pay: $23.14-$24.14 per hour

Responsibilities:

  • Supervising patrons in and around pool area and steam room
  • Opening, closing and maintaining pool area
  • Answering patrons’ questions
  • Teaching aqua-fitness classes, swimming lessons (group and private) & YWCA Swim Prog.
  • Ensuring pool area is neat and free from hazards and reporting maintenance needs to appropriate staff
  • Testing pool chemicals and temperature
  • Light cleaning of pool equipment and guard room
  • Attending mandatory in-services, staff meetings and interim classes to maintain and upgrade safety instruction skills
  • Rendering emergency care in the facility when necessary
  • Other duties necessary for program/membership care & need

Qualifications:

  • 3 years active lifeguarding experience
  • Current National Lifeguard Award
  • Standard First Aid/CPRC/AED (CPR Annually)
  • BCRPA Aquatic Fitness Leader Certification or equivalent (preferred)
  • Water Safety Instructor (WSI) certification or equivalent/Swim Coaching an asset
  • Proven leadership skills
  • Ability to engage with patrons and fellow staff
  • Outgoing and friendly personality
  • A valid clear criminal record check (including working with vulnerable populations) is required.

Skills

Nature & Scope:     

The Aquatics Team Leader will report to the Aquatics Supervisor, and work collaboratively with other members of the YMCA team to provide a safe and fun aquatics environment.  The Team Leader is responsible for providing support and delivering family focused programming and services, as well as helping to monitor and support program quality. 

 

Major Responsibilities: 

  • Effectively guard and instruct to the required performance standards
  • Provide support and leadership to swim instructors so they may meet performance criteria.
  • Initiate communication with parents during swim lessons
  • Prepare instructor assignments, makes adjustments as needed and completes required administrative duties in consultation with Aquatic Supervisor
  • Provide support and leadership to lifeguards to ensure the pool rules, procedures and practices meet the required standards
  • Build meaningful relationships through positive daily interaction with YMCA members, visitors, and colleagues
  • Promote philanthropy through the YMCA’s annual Strong Kids Campaign
  • Assists the Manager, Aquatics with general administrative duties.
  • Remain flexible – willing to learn new skills, alter shifts
  • Attend staff meetings, planning sessions and training events as required
  • Maintain regular attendance, punctuality and be appropriately dressed and well groomed

 

Requirements:   

  • Current Standard First Aid (valid within 2 years)
  • CPR-C & AED certificate (valid within 1 year)
  • Water Safety Instructor certification or equivalent
  • Current National Lifeguard  (NL) pool option - preferred
  • AMOA certification - preferred
  • Experience as a Lifeguard or Swimming Instructor - preferred
  • Access to reliable transportation or a vehicle
  • Advanced leadership courses are an asset

Position Overview The City of Nanaimo is seeking a temporary full-time Head Lifeguard/Instructor.
