  • Effectively guard and instruct to the required performance standards

The Vancouver Lawn Tennis & Badminton Club (“the Club”) is the city’s premier racquets, fitness, and social Club. Located just a few minutes from downtown, the Club offers exceptional tennis, badminton, squash, fitness and aquatics programming for over 4,000 members, along with a variety of social events with upscale-casual dining in 3 restaurants.

We are recruiting for Part-Time Lifeguards/Swimming Instructors to join our team for the spring and summer 2023 season.

 

Wage is: $19.00 to $22.00 per hour based on experience. 

 

OVERVIEW:

All aquatics team members are required to have both lifeguarding and swim instructor certifications. Due to the size of our pool, we operate with one lifeguard on duty at a time. You will provide supervision, prevention of injury and rules enforcement for the pool area and will act as the first aid attendant for our busy, multi-sport facility. You will provide safe, fun and effective swimming lessons for members of all ages and abilities from infants to adults in group, semi-private, and private lessons.

 

Successful candidates will be available for both weekday and weekend shifts and be able to work a minimum of 2 shifts per week. Shifts range in length from 2-5 hours long. Preference will be given to candidates who can work from May to end of August 2023.

Spring hours are available from May to mid-June from Monday-Friday between 2pm - 9pm and Saturdays/Sundays between 9am - 9pm. 

 

Additional weekday hours (between 9am - 6pm) Monday-Friday are available starting in late June. Additional coverage shifts are available from time to time.

 

We have a heated outdoor pool. You must be comfortable working in all weather conditions. Lifeguard shifts and swimming lessons run rain or shine! Successful candidates may be required to complete a  wet screen and will be available to start work as soon as possible.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Lifeguard:
• Use skills learned in NLS to provide a safe environment for all members
• Strictly but courteously enforce all pool/club rules and regulations
• Control the pool environment to prevent accidents
• Perform daily maintenance tasks as required to keep pool and pool area clean and tidy including checking pool chemistry (training provided).
• Be a confident first aid responder for accidents at the pool and all areas of the Club

 

Swimming Instructor:
• Use skills learned in Swim for Life course to teach swim lessons to all levels in a fun and safe environment
• Evaluate students to assess the correct level
• Adapt lesson plans to effectively meet the needs of all swimmers
• Prepare lesson plans and participate fully in classes with students
• Maintain accurate and thorough records and communicate confidently with parents, participants, and the Aquatics Coordinator

 

QUALIFICATIONS AND COMPETENCIES:

All certifications must remain current or lifeguards/instructors will not be permitted to work.
• NLS
• CPR-C/AED
• Standard First Aid
• Lifesaving Society Swim for Life Instructor
• Life Saving Instructor (not required but is an asset)
• A minimum of 1 year lifeguarding/instructing experience is preferred.
• Strong communication skills and the ability to communicate clearly and confidently

As a Lifeguard with VCH you will:

  • Be responsible for the conduct and safety of all persons in or near the pool as well as leading pool programs in a safe and professional manner.
  • Perform duties including:
    • checking pool area,
    • monitoring the general operation and cleanliness of the pool facility,
    • providing instruction in aquatic programs and adapted aquatic exercise,
    • reporting observations of client’s/resident’s progress,
    • organizing furnishings and equipment and maintaining an inventory of first aid and office equipment.
  • Perform first aid as required and office tasks pertinent to the daily operation of the facility.

Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • Graduation from Grade 12 plus one (1) year's recent related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • National Lifeguard Pool Option Certificate.
  • CPR-C Basic Rescuer Certificate, Standard First Aid Certificate or equivalent.
  • Red Cross Water Safety Instructor Certificate or equivalent.
  • Experience as an Aquafit Instructor is an asset.

Knowledge & Abilities

  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to organize work.
  • Physical ability to perform the duties of the position.
  • Ability to operate related equipment.
  • Ability to deal with others effectively.
