RESPONSIBILITIES

QUALIFICATIONS

• Completion of grade 12 and;

• Actively working towards graduation from a recognized college or university level program in a related discipline and/or;

• Be a qualified Swim for Life Instructor Trainer, BCRPA Supervisor of Fitness Leaders, NL Instructors or Trainer of Fitness Leaders and;

• Have formal lifeguard and instructor training, aquatic programming experience, and completion of pool operator’s course.

• Have a minimum of 2 years of relevant experience as a lifeguard and/or swim instructor and/or aquatic programmer and/or special events coordinator

• Have some supervisory experience.

• Have a valid BC Driver’s license.

The District of Summerland is seeking 3 permanent part-time Lifeguard / Instructor I’s and would consider casual lifeguards with high availability. These Lifeguards would provide lifeguarding and aquatic instruction at the Summerland Aquatic & Fitness Centre. Part-Time: To stay current in procedures, equipment, and lifeguarding, the successful candidates will be available for a minimum commitment of 12 hours per week from September to June, and a combined minimum of 40 hours for the months of July and August, pending schedule availability.

 

Casual: Casual Lifeguards must be available for a minimum of 25 hours for each 6-month period (January – June and July – December). 

 

The shift schedule is varied and may include hours between 5:45am – 10:00pm weekdays and 8:15am through 7:30pm on weekends. This is a union position (CUPE 1136), and the hourly wage is $29.04 plus 15% in lieu of benefits.

The Nanaimo White Rapids Summer Swim Club is a large youth swim club and a member of the BC Summer Swimming Association (BCSSA).  This family-centered youth swim club fosters social and skill development focusing on each athlete's personal best in a safe and fun community-based program. The Kin Pool in Bowen Park, Nanaimo BC is a city-owned, outdoor 6-lane, 25m pool and the official home of the Nanaimo White Rapids.  The Club operates the Kin Pool in a co-management agreement with the City of Nanaimo between May 1st and September 30th.  The co-management agreement includes a framework for providing public programming and swim club operations. 

 

The Pool Manager is an integral member of the Leadership Team and works alongside the Head Coach. The Pool Manager is largely responsible for the Kin Pool facility's operation and all public programming. The Leadership Team also includes senior coaches and senior lifeguards. The Pool Manager is accountable to the NWRSC Board and must have exceptional communication and leadership skills. They must consistently show strong interpersonal skills, clear written and verbal communication, problem solving skills, and mentorship abilities. The successful candidate must also exhibit strong organizational skills and the ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment. The Pool Manager must possess an enthusiastic and positive attitude in following and demonstrating the Mission Statement of the NWRSC. 

 

In consultation with the NWRSC Board of Director and Executive Coordinator, the Pool Manager will be responsible for laying out the season plan for all public programming as well as hiring, training, scheduling, and supervising the lifeguards and instructors for school lessons and rentals, public lessons community rentals, as well as scheduling appropriate lifeguard coverage for swim club activities. This position also involves ensuring that the facility is properly maintained and that the pool itself remains in compliance with all relevant regulations.   

 

The Pool Manager is an hourly position, 20-30 hours per week from mid-April to end of September, with the possibility of continuing part time (5-10 hours/ week) throughout the remainder of the calendar year. Hours will fluctuate according to requirements of summer pool season.

Responsibilities

 

Supervises pool manager and head coach (is situated in between Board and Pool manager/ Head coach) 

Daily / weekly check-ins with head coach and pool manager (together and/or separate) to stay apprised on functioning of both these streams 

Knows these roles and the "NWRSC Season Plan" 

Reporting to NWRSC Board on issues that board needs to attend to or be aware of 

E.g., employee conflicts, people going on leave and shifts covered, public complaints and how this was dealt with 

Reviewing and approving time sheet submissions (and liaising with bookkeeper) 

Assists head coach/ senior coaches with "away meet" travel bookings and reimbursement 

Attends all Board meetings, brings Head coach and Pool manager reports to each meeting and supports Head coach and Pool manager when issues need to be brought to the Board. 

Work with Pool Manager to promote Kin Pool rentals and Advanced Aquatics 

Arrange contracts for delivery of Advanced Aquatics programming 

Participates in on-boarding with all staff 

Liaises with customer base/pool community to garner feedback about programs 

 

Daily tasks

Check-ins with Head Coach and Pool Manager 

Weekly check-ins with Board (President or VP) 

Including written update using pre-specified form 

Available “open hours” each week for any staff member to bring forward concerns 

Performs additional tasks set out by the NWRSC Board

Ensure all bookings and communications for pool bookings etc. are attended to within 2-days 

Manage public facing profiles (advertising, marketing on social media etc.)

Reviewing user agreements and fees 

Research fundraising opportunities 

Assist with grant applications and proposal writing 

 

Essential skills: 

-Experience mentoring young employees in their first job 
-Working knowledge of non-profit organizations and the BC Societies Act 
-Familiarity with the BC Employment Standards Act

Asset qualifications: 

-Relevant education, interest, and experience in recreational management

Working directly with the Facility Manager, the Assistant Manager is responsible for the design, development and delivery of aquatic and recreation programming at the facility. Job  RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Coordinates program delivery for the Pool, Climbing Wall and Multi-purpose courts, including special events.
  • Assist in the hiring, training, and supervision of staff. 
  • Creates a staff schedule to meet the operational and budgetary requirements. 
  • Monitors the job performance of facility staff, program contractors, and volunteers.
  • Prepares correspondence, reports and other related material such as monthly and quarterly programming summaries as requested by the Facility Manager.
  • Prepares information/content for educational and promotional material such as recreation brochures, flyers, posters, and press releases.
  • Maintains records and files for programs, inventories, advertising, etc.
  • Performs Coordinator, Reception and Supervising duties as required.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Completion of a post-secondary program in recreation or other relevant education and/or experience
  • Minimum 3 years of relevant supervisory experience in the recreation field
  • Minimum 2 years experience as a lifeguard/swimming instructor 
  • Standard First Aid & CPR C (or willingness to recertify)
  • Excellent oral, written, facilitation and interpersonal communication skills
  • Ability to work independently as well as effectively with program staff and the ability to form relationships with patrons

Lifeguard is responsible for the effective operation of Kin Pool facility through the provision of lifeguarding, aquatic programs, and maintenance of the facility.  

 

Duties and Responsibilities: 

Ensure all policies of Lifesaving Society, National Lifeguard Service and Public Health Act Standards are being followed. Ensure pool safety through supervision and public education, enforcing pool rules, effectively responding to emergency situations, carrying out aquatic rescues and performing first aid. 

Instruct swimming lessons, providing a safe environment for learning, evaluating swimmers' strokes and skills, and providing effective feedback. 

Provide excellent customer service; developing a positive relationship with facility user groups and patrons. 

Cashiers for public swims; sets up cashier station for each shift, receives cash, balances float, and prepares cash report. 

Maintain cleanliness of bathroom facilities and demonstrates and upholds respect for the facility. 

Maintains safety equipment. 

Demonstrates and models respect for NWRSC coaches and board; works effectively in partnership with the Head Coach and NWRSC Executive Coordinator. 

Takes reasonable care to protect own health and safety and the health and safety of other persons affected by their actions. Ask for training if unfamiliar with the work they are requested to perform, work safely and encourage co-workers to do the same, and report unsafe conditions to the Pool Manager and NWRSC Executive Coordinator. 

 

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS: 

Minimum of 15 years or age 

Current National Lifeguard certificate (Lifesaving Society)- Pool Option (with valid recertification) 

CPR C with AED (with valid recertification)

The Aquatic Supervisor, working under the Recreation Services Manager, is responsible for the Aquatic Centre operations. This is a leadership role and includes supervisory functions of the Aquatic Centre and ensuring all work is carried out in accordance with recognized practices and established Municipal and Health and Safety policies and regulations. This includes but is not limited to supervising, lifeguarding, instructing, conducting research, promoting programs, scheduling, staff training, planning and implementing activities, customer service duties, maintaining stock and supplies, and may include being part of the hiring process.
