We are looking for individuals who are customer service oriented, and have a demonstrated track record for implementing aquatic procedures & policies and standards.

Pay: $23.14-$24.14 per hour

Responsibilities:

  • Supervising patrons in and around pool area and steam room
  • Opening, closing and maintaining pool area
  • Answering patrons’ questions
  • Teaching aqua-fitness classes, swimming lessons (group and private) & YWCA Swim Prog.
  • Ensuring pool area is neat and free from hazards and reporting maintenance needs to appropriate staff
  • Testing pool chemicals and temperature
  • Light cleaning of pool equipment and guard room
  • Attending mandatory in-services, staff meetings and interim classes to maintain and upgrade safety instruction skills

Qualifications:

  • 3 years active lifeguarding experience
  • Current National Lifeguard Award
  • Standard First Aid/CPRC/AED (CPR Annually)
  • BCRPA Aquatic Fitness Leader Certification or equivalent (preferred)
  • Water Safety Instructor (WSI) certification or equivalent/Swim Coaching an asset
  • Proven leadership skills

Nature & Scope:  

The Aquatics Supervisor leads the Aquatics staff team with a primary focus on aquatics programming and maintaining a safe aquatic environment. The Aquatics Supervisor also works collaboratively with all YMCA staff and volunteers. The work of the Aquatics Supervisor is advanced in its complexity and involves non-routine challenges. Work is also performed under limited direction according to broad guidelines. The successful candidate will have to problem solve and use their judgment in adapting and applying procedures to address and resolve unusual problem situations. This candidate will also be able to cover/teach Aqua Fit classes and lifeguard the pool when needed.

 

Major Responsibilities:

  • Develops and implements strategies that achieve and sustain program growth for aquatic programming
  • Ensures the provision of a safe aquatic environment through the hiring, supervision and training of lifeguards, instructors, and volunteers
  • Performs service standards and provides leadership through direct service delivery, with a focus on program quality and participant engagement
  • Identifies resource needs and liaises with Recruitment for hiring of new staff.
  • Provides role and program specific orientation and training to new employees and volunteers.
  • Coaches, develops, and supports employees and volunteers to achieve excellence in service delivery.
  • Provides ongoing management of employee and volunteer performance and completes reviews within required process timeframes.
  • Deals with performance issues using the required steps in the discipline process, up to and including termination.
  • Participates in branch/program planning sessions and assists with the development and implementation of program plan and materials, ensuring compliance with Association/legislative requirements.
  • Assists in preparation of program operating budget and ensures program is delivered within budget.

  • Explores and develops community partnership opportunity with the goal of increasing the breadth of YMCA programs and services

Requirements:  

  • Minimum 3 years progressive, results oriented, customer service, and aquatics supervisory experience.
  • Post‐secondary education in a related field

  • Current Standard First Aid and CPR‐C & AED certificate

Position Overview

The Instructor/Lifeguards work as part of team of aquatic staff responsible for the safety of patrons in the aquatic facilities and the successful delivery of daily programs and activities as well as completion of regular maintenance tasks.

  • Ability to teach water safety and aquatic skills to patrons ranging in age and abilities and provide effective in-class feedback and written reports.
  • Working knowledge of pool chemistry and maintenance equipment and procedures.
  • Effective interpersonal skills, including the ability to be courteous to others in situations of conflict or disagreement.
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.

Qualifications and Experience:

The Instructor/Lifeguard 1 position requires: Completion of Grade 12 or equivalent supplemented by a minimum of 500 hours of related lifeguarding experience and courses in lifesaving, aquatic skills, instruction and pool operations and maintenance as required for the certifications listed below.  

Candidates without Grade 12 or 500 hours experience may be considered for Auxiliary Junior Instructor/Lifeguard employment.

The Recreation department of the Corporate and Community Services division has an opportunity for qualified individuals to apply for the permanent position of Lifeguard/Swim Instructor at Meadow Park Sports Centre. Reporting to the Aquatics Recreation Programmer, this position offers a schedule of at least 40 hours bi-weekly during the sport centre operational hours of 6am to 9pm, including weekends.

 

The Lifeguard/Swim Instructor’s main responsibilities include safety supervision of the pool area; swim instruction for all ages; administration of first aid for the sports centre; completion of basic maintenance tasks in the pool area; and the delivery of positive sports centre guest service. Lifeguard/Swim Instructors will also assist with opening and closing of the pool facilities.

 

Qualified candidates are fully certified and qualified Lifeguard/Swim Instructors with current NL (pool), WSI, LSI, Standard First Aid and CPR-C certifications. This is a call out to all lifeguards and or previous lifesaving sport competitors.  We are the Pacific Swim Academy and over the last 3 years we have been instructing and training Lifesaving Sport in and around the city of Vancouver.  Our coaches include past members of Canada's National team.  We recently sent teams to Canadian Lifesaving Sport Nationals - both pool and surf competitions.  Athletes did extremely well.  We would like to train and take teams of youth, adult and masters swimmers to Nationals, Commonwealths (2023 - Windsor, ON) and World Championships (2024 - Australia).  Please contact phil@skinder.com if you would like to join us at training sessions in preparation for these events.  See you at the pool!
