Do you enjoy working with the public promoting healthy lifestyles in a fun and friendly manner, and working in an environment to ensure safety and teaching swimming to various age groups?  The City of Burnaby is actively recruiting Lifeguard/Instructors to join our team.

 

The City of Burnaby has eight (4 indoor and 4 outdoor) pools. The indoor pools are at Bonsor Recreation Complex, CG Brown Pool, Eileen Dailly Leisure Pool and Edmonds Community Centre. The outdoor pools include Central Park Outdoor Pool, Kensington Outdoor Pool, McPherson Outdoor Pool, and Robert Burnaby Outdoor Pool.

 

Some of the exciting duties of a Lifeguard/Instructor may include instructing aquatic programs to students of all ages, water surveillance and rule enforcement, as well as participating in rescues and first aid when required. Other responsibilities include chemical testing of pool water, cleaning the pool and bathrooms, completing daily reports related to daily tasks, and performing other related duties as required.

The following licences and current certifications are required:

-Red Cross Water Safety Instructor Certificate

-Lifesaving Society Instructor Certificate

Aqua Fitness Certificate, AED Certificate, Pool Operator’s Certificate, and valid Class 5 BC Driver’s License are considered assets.

 

If your application is short-listed, you must attend one wet-screen scheduled sometime in January – official dates will be announced to candidates via email in January 2016.  If successful in the wet-screen, you must be available to attend one dry interview shortly after the wet screening sessions (dates still TBD).  If selected, you must attend a mandatory orientation (dates to be determined).

 

Hourly wage: $21.87 per hour with 12% paid in lieu of benefits (Pay Grade 13).

Currently, we are looking for permanent full-time Instructor/Lifeguards to be a part of the team.  You will instruct basic aquatic programs, supervise users, provide emergency care for minor and major first aid situations, provide support to pool administrative and maintenance staff, test and maintain water quality, and assist with implementation of special events.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Completion of Grade 10
  • Previous Experience - 2 months Lifeguard and/or Instructor experience AND the following Current Base Awards:
  • NLS (National Lifeguard Service) Pool Option
  • Sears “I Can Swim” teacher certification
  • Standard First Aid /CPR Level C
  • Workplace Hazardous Materials Information Systems (WHMIS)
  • LSI (Lifesaving Society Instructor) Certification
  • Aquatic Fitness Certification (CALA, BCRPA or equivalent)
  • Teaching and interpersonal skills, safety conscious

An equivalent combination of education, training and experience may be considered.

Required To Operate Equipment Such As:

First aid equipment, office equipment, computer with applications such as Outlook, Word, Excel, Class and ERP, audio-visual equipment, basic maintenance tools and water test kits.
