This position involves lifeguarding, swim instruction, pool supervision, maintenance and other related duties. The primary focus of the Lifeguard/Swim Instructor is to facilitate safe community recreation for everyone through integration, inclusion, and participation in aquatic recreation. The Lifeguard/Swim instructor is expected to provide every member and guest with support and excellence in customer service.

Swimming instruction work involves teaching and evaluating all age groups and all levels of swimming, including specialized areas of instruction. Lifeguarding involves the effective supervision of all visitors, administration of first aid, performance of routine facility maintenance, and other related duties as required.

Requirements

The successful candidate must possess a current National Lifeguard Service Pool Option Certificate, Red Cross Water Safety Instructor Certificate, CPR Basic Rescuer “C” Certificate, and Standard First Aid, Aquatic Emergency Care Certificate or equivalent (deemed by the City of Vancouver). Registration and certification as an Aquafit Instructor and Lifesaving instructor are especially valuable. The City of Vancouver offers aquafit and lifesaving training to all members and guests. A Police Record Check is a requirement of the position. A Clearance requires the absence of any criminal charges or convictions related to this position. This position may include working weekends, statutory holidays, as well as early morning and late evening shifts.

promotion, and conducting orientation and in-service training, and performing evaluations on staff,
duties also include assisting in conducting maintenance and custodial programs ensuring that all pumps,
filters, chlorinators and related water treatment equipment are properly functional while maintaining
established standards of cleanliness and safety, and preparing and maintaining a variety of records and
reports related to the work.

 

The ideal candidates will have strong interpersonal, problem solving, supervisory organizational
effectiveness and communication skills. They should also have experience with lifeguard/instructor
related duties and pool operation/maintenance.

Hourly Wage: $24.68 per hour with 12% paid in lieu of benefits (Pay Grade 17).

The Recreation department has an opportunity for interested individuals to apply for the permanent full time position of Head Lifeguard/Swim Instructor.  Reporting to the Aquatics Recreation Programmer, this position offers 72 hours bi-weekly commencing in October 2013.

 The Head Lifeguard/Swim Instructor’s main responsibilities will be to supervise the daily pool operations and programs; lifeguard and instruct programs; safety supervision of the pool and surrounding areas; and provide administrative support to the Aquatics Programmer. The Head Lifeguard/Swim Instructorhas additional responsibilities in the areas of staff motivation, staff training, specialty program instruction, and weekly staffing schedules.

 The ideal candidate is a motivated self-starter and problem-solver who is comfortable in a variety of public relations situations. They will also possess a Grade 12 Diploma, current NLS, WSI, First Aid and CPR-C and will have a minimum of 3 years of lifeguarding, supervisory and scheduling experience.  NLSI, WSIT and LIST qualifications are an asset.  Candidates must have considerable knowledge of aquatic-related policy and procedures; water safety and first aid; demonstrate strong skills in communication, instruction and lifeguarding; and be available to work a variety of shifts between the hours of 6 a.m. and 10 p.m.

The Lifeguard Instructor II must be positive and responsive when dealing with public user groups, other aquatic employees, and perform as a dedicated team player. In addition you must be able to think clearly while handling multiple priorities in emergency situations. The successful candidate will also possess the following current certifications:

  • National Lifeguard Service (NLS) Certification
  • Standard First Aid, CPR-C and AED Certifications
  • Water Safety Instructor (WSI), Lifesaving Instructor (LSI)
