Nature & Scope:                  The Lifeguard/Swim Instructor will report to the Aquatic/Youth Team Leader, and work collaboratively with other members of the YMCA team to provide a safe and fun aquatics environment. 

 

Major Responsibilities:

·         Guard the pool and teach swim lessons in a positive and professional manner

  • Build meaningful relationships through positive daily interaction with YMCA members, visitors, and colleagues
  • Promote philanthropy through the YMCA’s annual Strong Kids Campaign
  • Develop lesson plans for various programs and administer progressive evaluations for participants.
  • Ensure program design, lay-out, and offerings meet the needs of all participants at various levels
  • Lead program delivery, while ensuring contents meet the appropriate criteria and outline
  • Perform general administrative duties and record keeping responsibilities
  • Maintain an atmosphere of achievement that inspires self and others to succeed at the highest levels
  • Ensure the safety of all members, participants, staff, and property by following YMCA standards/policies/procedures and ensuring they are maintained amongst all members and staff, including all locker rooms and spectator viewing areas.
  • Maintain a neat, orderly, and clean environment, including all program areas, common spaces, and washrooms
  • Assist with training new staff/volunteers in procedures and practices
  • Remain flexible – willing to learn new skills, alter shifts
  • Attend staff meetings, planning sessions and training events as required

·         Maintain regular attendance, punctuality and be appropriately dressed and well groomed

 

Requirements:

  • Current Standard First Aid certificate (valid within 2 years)
  • CPR level C and & AED certificate (valid within 1 year)
  • Current National Lifeguard Service (NLS) pool option
  • Experience as a Lifeguard/Swim instruction
  • YMCA Swim Instructor or equivalent
  • YMCA Aquatic Fitness Certificate, or equivalent, is preferred
  • Advanced leadership courses are an asset
  • Demonstrated high level of customer service skills
  • Successful candidates will be required to provide a current and satisfactory Criminal Reference Check/Vulnerable Sector Search issued no later than six (6) months preceding your start date

This is aquatic work in lifeguarding and instructing, on an assigned shift, at an indoor aquatic facility.
The incumbent performs a variety of operational, instructional, lifeguarding and maintenance tasks
in accordance with established practices and procedures. Other duties include conducting
instructional and recreational aquatic programs for all age ranges and for a variety of special
community groups including the disabled; conduct and promote Aquafitness courses; administering
first aid as required; performing minor scheduled maintenance tasks with respect to pool water,
facilities and equipment such as filters, chlorinators and related water treatment equipment; and
performing related duties as required.

Qualifications include completion of Grade 12, supplemented by courses in lifesaving, aquatics,

combination of training and experience.  Required certificates:  1) National Lifeguard Service Award
Pool option (NLS); 2) Red Cross Water Safety Instructor Certificate (WSI); 3) Life Saving Society
Instructor Certificate (LSI); 4) CPR Certificate - Level C; 5) BCRPA Basic Fitness Leader – Aquatics.
Desirable certificates include Pool Operator’s I and II Certificates.

Responsibilities of this position include:

  • Swim instruction, pool supervision, maintenance and emergency medical care
  • Facilitating safe community recreation for everyone through integration, inclusion, and participation in aquatic recreation.
  • Providing every member and guest with support and excellence in customer service.
  • Teaching and evaluating all age groups and all levels of swimming, including specialized areas of instruction.

Join us and work May through to August.  With over 1500 meters of ocean beach overlooking the scenic Strait of Georgia this position will allow you to play an important part in the girls’ fun, friendship, adventure and discovery at the camp.  Camp Olave has been in operation for over 85 years providing a variety of camping experiences for girls.
 
You will report to the Summer Staff Supervisor and in this exciting position your main responsibility will be to ensure the safety of participants in all waterfront activities including swimming, kayaking and canoeing.  Additionally, you will support other activities in the camp such as leading girls through the various nature programs and special events.
 
 Qualifications:
  • Hold a current National Lifeguard Service (NLS)* with 750 hours recent related experience
  • Current Standard First Aid and CPR certification
  • Competence and experience in operating canoes and/or kayaks
  • Female, 19 years of age or over
  • Environmental studies an asset

 

 

Life guard wage is $22.00 per hour, plus enjoy onsite beachfront accommodation provided by the camp.
