 Deck Leaders

            The Armstrong Aquatic Center is looking for qualified and experienced lifeguards to take the role of leadership more seriously this summer within the position of a Deck Leader.

Qualifications Required:

National Lifeguard (NL)- Recent up to 2 years

Head Guard Course- Recent up to 2 years (Offered through ASPRD)

Water Safety Instructor (WSI)- Recent up to 2 years

Standard First Aid or AEC (SFA/AEC)- Recent up to 3 years

CPR-C & AED- Recent up to a year

Two or more years’ experience.

One or more of the following:

Lifesaving Instructor (LSI)

Pool Operator 1 or 2

Other specialized Course

Duties:

·         Will be classified as Deck Leader when Supervisor is not in facility or is busy with other duties.

·         Facility management when classified as Deck Leader, including cleanliness & health.

·         Duty of facility supervision to employees as well as all patrons.

·         Emergency management

·         Report management

·         Staff Training

·         Event Planning

·         Daily management duties

·         Shift Reports for Supervisor  

·         Lesson & Program management

·         Attend and make all in-services a priority.

·         Also perform all duties of an instructor/guard when not designated as a Deck Leader

·         If at any time a Deck Leader shows themselves unfit to uphold the required level of maturity, integrity or work ethic, the title of Deck Leader will be removed for the rest of the season.

Seasonal Pool Managers - May to August 2017

The Yukon offers a unique and challenging work environment for mature, self-motivated and energetic individuals who are interested in working in small, northern communities.  Positions are available in a variety of Yukon communities ranging in population from 100 to 2000.  Experience 24-hour daylight, northern lights, wilderness hiking, canoeing, fishing and music festivals, while you re-live the days of the Klondike Gold Rush!

The Pool Manager is responsible for the overall day-to-day operations and maintenance of the community pool.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Completion of Grade 12
  • Previous Lifeguard and Instructor experience
  • Basic facility operations & maintenance
  • Supervision and training of staff and volunteers
  • Basic knowledge of Yukon and BC of health & safety regulations as related to the safe operation of aquatic facilities
  • Demonstrable theory, practical skills and abilities related to water rescue, safety and prevention, program content, delivery and communication.  This includes assisting in the delivery of a wide range of innovative aquatic programs, services and events.
  • Ability to work independently as well as weekends, evenings and holidays

Successful candidates must be available to attend the Spring Aquatics Workshop May 15-19/17. The workshop will provide rural Yukon pool staff with all the tricks and tools needed to have a safe and successful aquatics season.  Participants will have re-certification opportunities and receive WHMIS and Pool Operators Level 1 – Yukon Supplement certification.

Compensation:

Wages range from $20-24/hour and many communities offer extra benefits, such as accommodations and a travel subsidy.

The Yukon Government assists Yukon communities with the hiring of their staff.  Communities are responsible for interviewing and hiring applicants of their choice.  Pool Managers work for the community in which they are hired and are not Yukon government employees.

Instructor

Instructors are instrumental in delivering high quality programming to our campers. Whether by teaching our Eco-Fun courses (science-based Forest and Environmental education courses), leading a hike to a nearby lake, or orchestrating a campfire, an instructor’s responsibilities require enthusiasm and their own unique twist. They will take a leadership role in the general Pre-Camp training sessions and will facilitate training sessions to the rest of our summer staff. Given that all staff and campers stay onsite at the Evans Lake Forest Education Centre while camp is in session, the action never stops and, accordingly, applicants should enjoy working in ever-changing and dynamic work environments. Very strong organizational and interpersonal skills are a must, as well as a yearning for an endless summer! Love theme lunches, high fives, and hands-on & outdoor experiences?

 

Responsibilities and Duties:

 

General

·       Coordinates 1 of 5 programming areas (Waterfront, Rock-Climbing & Ropes, First Aid, Eco Fun, Out-Tripping)

·       Delivers Forest & Environmental education courses

·       Leads hikes and out-trips

·       Demonstrate positive and engaging leadership for campers aged 8-16

·       Drives camp vehicles for baggage transport, and camper transportation

·       Other duties as assigned

 

Term

  • Late April/Early May (mid-June start may be available) through late August, 2017 (date to be confirmed)
  • Preference may be given to candidates who can work through the end of the Autumn season (late October)

 

Safety

  • Compliance with the society’s policies and procedures contained in the Staff, Human Resources (HR), and Emergency Procedures Manuals. Orientation to these procedures will occur during Staff Training
  • Report safety deficiencies and concerns to Facilities Manager, or (if suitable) during daily staff meeting

 

Reporting and Evaluation

  • Instructors report directly to the Program Manager and receive mentoring & coaching from senior program staff
  • A goal-setting process will be initiated at the beginning of the season by the Program Manager, and to be followed up on with two check-ins throughout the summer
  • A formal end of season evaluation with Senior Program staff will occur
  • Continuous feedback and communication amongst staff members is encouraged

 

Required Certifications & Experience

·       First Aid Certificate (at minimum 8-hour basic certificate)

·       Applicants must have either a 40-hour advanced First Aid certificate (i.e. Occupational First Aid Level II), or an

·       NLS lifeguarding certificate

·       Additional certifications and licenses are considered to be assets. Examples include: Class 4 & 5 Driver’s

·       License, certifications in paddling, rock-climbing, and outdoor recreation & leadership Educational background with special relevance include: Forestry, Environmental Sciences, Outdoor Recreation, Education
