The North Vancouver Recreation and Culture Commission is looking for Swim Instructors and Lifeguards.

 

This is aquatic work in lifeguarding and instructing, on an assigned shift, at an indoor aquatic facility.  The Swim Instructor/Guard 1 performs a variety of operational, instructional, janitorial and minor preventative maintenance tasks in offering instructional and recreational aquatic programs for all age groups. 

 

DUTIES:        

  • Performs lifeguarding duties, ensuring for the safety of patrons utilizing the aquatic facility and supervising the use of the swimming and related recreation areas such as the whirlpool, sauna, steam room and exercise rooms
  • Ensures the safe use of the aquatic equipment and toys in and around the aquatic facility
  • Performs custodial and janitorial duties relative to the facility
  • Performs minor scheduled maintenance tasks with respect to pool water, facilities and equipment
  • Conducts instructional and recreational aquatic programs for all age ranges and for a variety of special community groups such as those including the disabled; provides information to the public regarding instructional evaluation techniques and patron progress
  • Prepares and maintains a variety of records related to the work

 

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS:

  • Sound knowledge of the theory plus practical demonstration of lifesaving skills and first aid
  • Working knowledge of teaching methods and group leadership techniques emphasizing instruction in water safety and aquatic skills
  • Ability to display sound aquatic skills and to instruct in these skills at standards set by relevant authorities
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with officials, employees and patrons
  • Ability to prepare and maintain records relating to the work

 

DESIRABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:

Completion of the 12th grade, supplemented by courses in lifesaving, aquatic and instruction plus sound related experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

 

National Lifeguard Service, Lifesaving Instructor, Water Safety Instructor, CPR C current within 1 year, Aquatic Emergency Care (AEC) or Standard First Aid current within 2 years, and I Can Swim Instructor certification are required. 

 

All Commission employees should be prepared to work at any Commission location. All candidates are required to submit to a Criminal Record Search prior to any appointment.

  • LSI (Lifesaving Society Instructor) Certification

Required To Operate Equipment Such As:

First aid equipment, office equipment, computer with applications such as Outlook, Word, Excel, Class and ERP, audio-visual equipment, basic maintenance tools and water test kits.
