Part-time Lifeguard and Swimming Instructor

Title: Part-time Lifeguard and Swimming Instructor
 
Location: The Vancouver Lawn Tennis & Badminton Club
 
Reports to: Aquatics Coordinator and Programs Manager
 
Dates: Applicants must be available for a minimum of July and August 2016. Preference will be given to those who can start work before June 2016.
 
Scope: To provide supervision, prevention of injury and first aid to the pool area and be a first responder for other injuries in the club. To provide safe, fun, and effective swim lessons for members of various ages and abilities (lessons are primarily for children). You will be required to teach private, semi-private, and small group lessons. To assist with summer multi-sport camp programs as required.
 
Hours of operation
Summer: Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday 9am-6pm, Wednesdays 9am-9pm, Saturday 9am-4pm, Sunday 9 am-9pm.
 
Shifts: Guards/instructors will be on duty for shifts 2-4 hours in length. Instructing shifts will be shorter/longer based on lesson demand. Guarding shifts are 4 hours.
 
Work Environment: Outdoor pool May-October, bubble covered October-April.

Duties and Responsibilities:
 
Lifeguard:
  • Strictly but courteously enforce all pool/club rules and regulations
  • Use skills learned in NLS to provide a safe environment for all members
  • Control the pool environment in order to prevent accidents
  • Check pool chemistry and record levels in the Daily Pool Log each shift
  • Perform daily maintenance tasks as required to keep pool and pool area clean and tidy
  • Arrive at work at least 5 minutes before each shift.
  • Be first aid responder for accidents in other areas of the Club
  • Complete incident reports as required and submit them to the Aquatics Coordinator and front desk immediately
  • Interact with members using the pool in a friendly manner
  • Attend all scheduled in-services
  • Assist in promoting the aquatic programs as required
Swimming Instructor:
  • Use skills learned in Water Safety Instructor course to teach swim lessons to all levels.
  • Evaluate students during the first lesson to assess the correct level
  • Use Red Cross standards for evaluation of students
  • Participate fully in classes with students
  • Be on time, and start/end classes promptly
  • Liaise with the Aquatics Coordinator if children are in the wrong levels
  • Prepare for classes and have lesson plans as required
  • Other
  • Assists the Aquatics Coordinator and Programs Manager with Special Events as required (i.e. Breakfast with Santa, kids Halloween party, kids pool party)
  • Maintains current qualifications at all times and provides copies of relevant certifications to the Aquatics Coordinator.
  •  Lifeguards/instructors have the opportunity to lead spring break and summer camps.
Qualifications
 
All certifications must remain current or lifeguards/instructors will not be permitted to work.

  • CPR-C/AED
  • Standard First Aid
  • Water Safety Instructor
  • Life Saving Instructor (not required but is an asset)
  •  A minimum of 1 year guarding/instructing experience

Aquatic Team Leader

Job Description: 

The Aquatic Team Leader will assist in supervising and participate in lifeguarding and instruction of aquatic swim classes and fitness programs, ensuring progressive swimming instruction in the Y aquatic system. Reporting to the Aquatic Coordinator, the Aquatic Team Leader will be responsible for the safe and effective operation of the day to day activities on the pool deck, the quality of aquatic programs and the maintenance and cleanliness of the aquatic facility. The successful candidate will be highly motivated, organized, resourceful and capable of maintaining a positive, caring, service-oriented environment. A willingness to work a flexible schedule is required. Responsibilities

UBC Aquatic Centre Daycamps are looking for Aquatic Daycamp Leaders who have experience working with children (ages 5 to 14 years) in a camp setting with speciality interests in either Aquatics and General Sports.  Camps run between 9am and 4pm for a 7 hour day for March Spring Break, Monday, March 14 to Friday, March 18 and Monday, March 21 to Thursday, March 24. Dry activities (arts, crafts, games, sports, outrips, etc.) and wet activities (Red Cross lesson and recreational swim) components are involved with each camp.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Implementing and instructing swim lesson, water and land activities and sports
  • Supervising camp participants (ages ranging from 5 to 12 years) in the water, classroom and on outrips
  • Ensuring safety of all camp participants
  • Signing in and out camp participants

Remuneration:  $13 to $15 per hour plus 4% in lieu of benefits.

Required certifications include WSI and Standard First Aid.  Recommended certification NL.

Previous camp and/or experience working directly with children in an aquatic setting is recommended.

Description
Under the direction of an Occupational Therapist, the Rehabilitation Assistant implements rehabilitative treatment plans and programs in the pool, and assists the therapist in monitoring and evaluating patient progression.
 
Please note: the clientele is children ages 4 – 18, who are non-verbal with their communication, and utilize walkers and wheelchairs for mobility. Diagnoses include Autism, Developmental Delay and Cerebral Palsy.

Qualifications and Experience

At Camp Olave near Sechelt, BC

 

Join us and work May through to August.  With over 1500 meters of ocean beach overlooking the scenic Gulf Islands this position will allow you to play an important part in the girls’ fun, friendship, adventure and discovery at the camp. Our camp has been operating for over 85 years providing a variety of camping experiences for girls. 

 

You will report to the Summer Staff Supervisor and in this exciting position your main responsibility will be to ensure the safety of participants in all waterfront activities including swimming, kayaking and canoeing.  Additionally, you will support other activities in the camp such as leading girls through the various nature programs and special events.

 Qualifications:

  • Current NLS Waterfront Award* and 750 hours recent related experience
  • Current Standard First Aid and CPR certification
  • CRCA Flatwater Level C, equivalent or recent related canoe and kayak experience
  • Female, 19 years of age or over
  • Environmental studies an asset

 

Life guard wage is $22.00 per hour, plus enjoy - onsite beachfront accommodation provided by the camp.
