The Township of Langley is currently recruiting for up to 15 auxiliary Recreation Worker IV – Lifeguard/Instructors to join our team of professionals in the Recreation, Culture and Parks Division.  The focus of this position is to provide lifeguarding functions as well as instructional duties for a variety of aquatic programs.

 

All qualifications must be current and provided with application to be considered for this position:

 

  • Red Cross Water Safety Instructor certification
  • LSS NLS - Pool and Water Park Option certifications
  • Standard First Aid certification
  • CPR Level C certification
  • AED certificate (Automated External Defibrillator)
  • Successful candidates must be a minimum of 17 years

 

Qualified, short-listed candidates will undergo a practical assessment of their skills.

 

This position is defined by the Township of Langley as a position of trust (Child Safety) and requires a criminal record check prior to employment start date. 

 

The rate of pay for this CUPE position is $20.45 – $23.96 per hour (2011 rates), plus 12 % in lieu of benefits.  The hours of work are varied, including a variety of shifts on nights, weekends and statutory holidays.

Nature & Scope:  The Aquatics Program Manager reports to the General Manager and works collaboratively with all YMCA staff and volunteers. The successful applicant will lead all aspects of the Langara Family YMCA Aquatics Department operations, provide leadership and supervision to the Child & Youth Program Department, and serve as a support for aquatics based initiatives for the Association.  The Aquatics Programs Manager will be responsible for delivering on our vision of building a community in which a generation of children and families reach their full potential.

 

Major Responsibilities:

 

  • Provide support to the YMCA of Greater Vancouver Association regarding aquatics-based initiatives and strategies.
  • Develop and implement strategies that achieve and sustain program growth for aquatic programming.
  • Ensure the provision of a safe aquatic environment through the hiring, supervision and training of lifeguards, instructors and volunteers.
  • Role model service standards and provide leadership through direct service delivery, with a focus on program quality and participant engagement.
  • Lead a team of approximately 30 aquatics staff and volunteers.
  • Provide leadership, direction and guidance to the Child & Youth Department Supervisor and staff team.
  • Assist with training new staff/volunteers in procedures and practices
  • Explore and develop community partnership opportunity with the goal of increasing the breadth of YMCA programs and services.
  • Progressively evaluate and adjust current Aquatics and Child & Youth programming to meet the needs of YMCA members.
  • Manage to targets in annual operating plans and budgets.
  • Provide strategic leadership as a member of the Langara Family YMCA Leadership Team.
  • Build meaningful relationships through positive daily interaction with YMCA members, visitors, and colleagues
  • Promote philanthropy through the YMCA’s annual Strong Kids Campaign
  • Maintain an atmosphere of achievement that inspires self and others to succeed at the highest levels
  • Ensure the safety of all members, participants, staff, and property by following YMCA standards/policies/procedures and ensuring they are maintained amongst all members and staff.
  • Provide key leadership on the implementation of the YMCA’s seven priority service standards of: convenience; cleanliness and maintenance of facilities and equipment; safety; friendly and welcoming; building positive relationships; and ensure staff/volunteers are engaged and knowledgeable.

 

Requirements:

  • University degree in a related field and five or more years of relevant experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Demonstrated achievement in implementing service standards
  • Current National Lifeguard Service (NLS) pool option
  • Experience as a Lifeguard/Swim instruction
  • YMCA Swim Instructor or equivalent
  • YMCA Aquatic Fitness Certificate, or equivalent, is preferred
  • Advanced leadership courses are an asset
  • Philanthropic and not‐for‐profit sector experience an asset
  • Ability to multitask and remain results‐focused in a fast paced, customer focused environment
  • Experience leading staff and volunteer teams
  • Proven decision‐making competency and ability to think quickly in difficult situations
  • Current Standard First Aid and CPR‐C & AED certificate
