The City of Revelstoke invites applications for the position of Casual Lifeguard/Instructor.

The successful candidate must have current National Lifeguard, Water Safety Instructor and Standard First Aid with CPR-C & AED certifications. This position is within the Bargaining Unit of C.U.P.E. Job Summary:

To provide for the safety of patrons using a City owned and operated aquatic facility. This position calls for trained personnel to guard the pool during operational hours, provide a high standard of cleanliness for the entire aquatic facility and offer instruction during pool lessons. The person must be in good physical condition and have the required qualifications and standards as set by the Lifesaving Society.

Reports to:

Aquatic Centre Supervisor

Key Duties and Responsibilites:

  • Attend staff in service program
  • Provide lifeguarding services for aquatic centre needs
  • Perform minor building/pool facility maintenance as required
  • Keep accurate records for attendance, pool chemicals and water tests
  • Test and add chemicals to all pools as required
  • Administer first aid as required
  • Supervise and organize water play activities for swimmers
  • Prepare, instruct and evaluate swim lesson programs for participants of all ages
  • Act in a professional manner on behalf of the Parks, Recreation & Culture Department in areas of public relations and contact with the public
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by the Supervisor on shift

Work Environment:

  • The environment may be busy and noisy
  • The incumbent will need to have the capacity to deal with emergencies and stressful situations at any time
  • He / she must also handle various chemical including chlorine
  • This position may call for the incumbent to work ten (10) hour days.

Skills and Knowledge:

  • Considerable knowledge of lifesaving, patron control, resuscitation, first aid and pool lifeguarding policies, procedures and techniques
  • Considerable knowledge of swimming, water safety, rescue and lifesaving instructional and pupil evaluation, policies, practices and procedures
  • Working knowledge of aquatic facility janitorial practices and procedures
  • Ability to instruct and relate effectively with pupils of all ages and physical abilities
  • Ability to supervise and scan the activities of large groups of facility users in the pool
  • Ability as a strong swimmer and to demonstrate excellent physical condition
  • Ability to prepare a variety of routine reports
  • Skill in the use of specialized rescue, resuscitation and first aid equipment
  • Ability to exercise courtesy, tact, diplomacy and some persuasion in a wide variety of contacts with the general public, co-workers and swimmers


  • Grade 12, minimum of 19 years of age
  • Lifesaving Society National Lifeguard certification
  • Red Cross Water Safety Instructor certification
  • Standard First Aid with CPR-C & AED from a recognized agency
