The Nanaimo White Rapids Summer Swim Club (NWRSC) is a large youth swim club and a member of the BC Summer Swimming Association (BCSSA). This family-centered youth swim club fosters social and skill development focusing on each athlete's personal best in a safe and fun community-based program. The Kin Pool in Bowen Park, Nanaimo BC is a city-owned, outdoor 6-lane, 25m pool and the official home of the Nanaimo White Rapids. The Club operates the Kin Pool in a co-management agreement with the City of Nanaimo between May 1st and September 30th. The co-management agreement includes a framework for providing public programming and swim club operations. 

 

The NWRSC Board of Directors is seeking to hire an Executive Coordinator to support its operations. The ideal candidate has relevant education, interest, and experience in recreational management, experience working with young employees in their first job, and has prior experience and/or knowledge of aquatics. 

 

 

Accountable to: NWRSC Board of Directors 

 

Responsibilities

 

Supervises pool manager and head coach (is situated in between Board and Pool manager/ Head coach) 

Daily / weekly check-ins with head coach and pool manager (together and/or separate) to stay apprised on functioning of both these streams 

Knows these roles and the "NWRSC Season Plan" 

Reporting to NWRSC Board on issues that board needs to attend to or be aware of 

E.g., employee conflicts, people going on leave and shifts covered, public complaints and how this was dealt with 

Reviewing and approving time sheet submissions (and liaising with bookkeeper) 

Assists head coach/ senior coaches with "away meet" travel bookings and reimbursement 

Attends all Board meetings, brings Head coach and Pool manager reports to each meeting and supports Head coach and Pool manager when issues need to be brought to the Board. 

Work with Pool Manager to promote Kin Pool rentals and Advanced Aquatics 

Arrange contracts for delivery of Advanced Aquatics programming 

Participates in on-boarding with all staff 

Liaises with customer base/pool community to garner feedback about programs 

 

Daily tasks

Check-ins with Head Coach and Pool Manager 

Weekly check-ins with Board (President or VP) 

Including written update using pre-specified form 

Available “open hours” each week for any staff member to bring forward concerns 

Performs additional tasks set out by the NWRSC Board 

Interfacing with coaches, instructors, lifeguards, families 

Ensure all bookings and communications for pool bookings etc. are attended to within 2-days 

Manage public facing profiles (advertising, marketing on social media etc.) 

Other tasks may include: 

Reviewing user agreements and fees 

Research fundraising opportunities 

Assist with grant applications and proposal writing 

 

Essential skills: 

-Experience mentoring young employees in their first job 
-Working knowledge of non-profit organizations and the BC Societies Act 
-Familiarity with the BC Employment Standards Act 
-Self-directed, initiative taking 
-Strong leadership and problem-solving skills 
 
Asset qualifications: 

-Relevant education, interest, and experience in recreational management 
-Experience and/or knowledge of aquatics 
-Past experience working with non-profit board-run organizations 
-Experience with proposal writing and researching funding opportunities 
-Experience working in Human Resources 

 
Terms of employment: 

April 1, 2024 (flexible start) - Aug 30 (opportunity to stay-on and support fall/winter programs) 

20-25hrs/week (flexible) 
Most/all work in “on site” at the Kin Pool (this is not remote work from home situation); structure of hrs to be discussed with Board (eg, 2 mornings, 3 afternoons) 

Rate of Pay:  

Starting wage for this position is 25$/ hour. Hourly rates will be scaled to reflect previous experience and expertise; rates will be discussed with each applicant following the interview process.

The Bulkley Valley Regional Pool & Recreation Centre is located in the beautiful town of Smithers (www.smithers.ca) in northwest British Columbia.  Built and operated by the not-for-profit Bulkley Valley Aquatic Centre Management Society, the Centre features a 4-lane 25m main pool, leisure lagoon, tot pool, 25 person hot tub, sauna, fitness studio, indoor rock climbing wall, and squash/racquetball courts.

Working directly with the Facility Manager, the Assistant Manager is responsible for the design, development and delivery of aquatic and recreation programming at the facility. This full-time position (38 hours/week) will include a combination of set and flexible hours; some shifts may include evenings and weekends. 

 

Job  RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Coordinates program delivery for the Pool, Climbing Wall and Multi-purpose courts, including special events.
  • Assist in the hiring, training, and supervision of staff. 
  • Creates a staff schedule to meet the operational and budgetary requirements. 
  • Monitors the job performance of facility staff, program contractors, and volunteers.
  • Prepares correspondence, reports and other related material such as monthly and quarterly programming summaries as requested by the Facility Manager.
  • Prepares information/content for educational and promotional material such as recreation brochures, flyers, posters, and press releases.
  • Maintains records and files for programs, inventories, advertising, etc.
  • Performs Coordinator, Reception and Supervising duties as required.
  • Organizes and executes assigned projects.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Completion of a post-secondary program in recreation or other relevant education and/or experience
  • Minimum 3 years of relevant supervisory experience in the recreation field
  • Minimum 2 years experience as a lifeguard/swimming instructor 
  • Standard First Aid & CPR C (or willingness to recertify)
  • Excellent oral, written, facilitation and interpersonal communication skills
  • Ability to work independently as well as effectively with program staff and the ability to form relationships with patrons
  • Demonstrate ability to use a variety of computer software application including MS Office and experience with a computerized registration system (ActiveNet, or perfect mind)

Desirable Qualifications

  • Current NL, SFL & LSI (and willing to re-certify) and one advance course instructor 
  • Knowledge of Indoor Rock Climbing; ability to Belay
  • BCRPA Pool Operators Level I and II
  •  HighFive – PHCD and Quest 2

Skills

We are looking for an enthusiastic, hard-working, and responsible individual with a passion for aquatics with a minimum of 5 years of lifeguarding /swim program instruction experience, and 3 years of supervisory experience.  Education background of a degree or diploma in recreation, sport, leadership, leisure service, business, or other related field is an asset. 

The following certifications are required for this position: National Lifeguard, LS Swim for Life, Lifesaving Instructor, Standard First Aid & CPR-C, Pool Operator, and at least one advance leadership certification. The following are an asset, certified Aquafit Instructor, BCRPA High-Five, First Aid Instructor, NL Instructor, WSI Trainer, LSI Trainer.

Position Summary 

The Lifeguard-Instructor performs as a professional team player in providing the best aquatic recreational service to the community. 

 

Under the direction of the Head Guard, Head Instructor and/or designate, the Lifeguard-Instructor provides supervision and performs lifeguard and instructional duties to ensure patron safety. The Lifeguard-Instructor provides supervision of the entire aquatic area (pools, deck, changerooms, steam room, sauna, gym, and viewing areas) as well as aid with the operation and delivery on aquatic and recreation programs, swim meets, and special events. The Lifeguard-Instructor is positive and responsive when dealing with the public and user groups, including varsity, sport and/or club teams, the National Swim Center, student users, rental groups, and members of the community. They will perform a variety of custodial and facility maintenance tasks, and possess a basic knowledge of pool chemistry and operating procedures. Shift work is required for this position, including mornings, evenings, and weekends. 

 

Duties and Responsibilities 

o Performs lifeguarding and instructional duties 

o Performs custodial, operational, and maintenance tasks 

o Performs administrative duties as assigned, including but not limited to, completing pertinent reports and records regarding swim classes, facility operations, water chemistry, and bather      safety

o Promotes aquatic safety and ensures that patrons act in compliance with all rules and regulations governing the operations of the aquatic area. 

o Accepts, handles, and assists the public with any enquiries and/or complaints in a respectful, courteous, and tactful manner; forwards items that cannot be resolved to the Supervisor. 

o Provides assistance with the operation and delivery of aquatic and recreation programs, swim meets, and special events 

o Knowledgeable about WorkSafeBC and B.C Health Act regulations and ensures minimum requirements are being met. 

o Reports all safety hazards, mechanical problems etc. immediately to the Supervisor 

o Attends and performs all skills related to each scheduled Inservice training session, at the start of each term 

 

o Physically capable and fully versed in the aquatic area emergency procedures and prepared to take command in an emergency situation 

o Follows UBC Aquatic Centre policies and procedures and expectations for staff conduct while presenting a professional image of the facility and UBC Athletics and Recreation 

o Fills Lifeguarding and Instructing shift vacancies as required. 

o Performs other duties as assigned 

 

Required Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills 

o Knowledge and/or experience in lifeguarding, instruction, and first aid 

o Knowledge and/or experience in pool chemistry and maintenance 

o Knowledge and/or experience in pool administration, organizational, oral and written skills 

o Working knowledge of the rules and regulations governing public safety in swimming pools 

o Projects a professional appearance 

o Demonstrates initiative, sound judgement, positive attitude, and responsiveness when dealing with the public, user groups, and staff

Job Summary: 
Lifeguard is responsible for the effective operation of Kin Pool facility through the provision of lifeguarding, aquatic programs, and maintenance of the facility.  

 

Duties and Responsibilities: 

Ensure all policies of Lifesaving Society, National Lifeguard Service and Public Health Act Standards are being followed. Ensure pool safety through supervision and public education, enforcing pool rules, effectively responding to emergency situations, carrying out aquatic rescues and performing first aid. 

Instruct swimming lessons, providing a safe environment for learning, evaluating swimmers' strokes and skills, and providing effective feedback. 

Provide excellent customer service; developing a positive relationship with facility user groups and patrons. 

Cashiers for public swims; sets up cashier station for each shift, receives cash, balances float, and prepares cash report. 

Maintain cleanliness of bathroom facilities and demonstrates and upholds respect for the facility. 

Maintains safety equipment. 

Demonstrates and models respect for NWRSC coaches and board; works effectively in partnership with the Head Coach and NWRSC Executive Coordinator. 

Takes reasonable care to protect own health and safety and the health and safety of other persons affected by their actions. Ask for training if unfamiliar with the work they are requested to perform, work safely and encourage co-workers to do the same, and report unsafe conditions to the Pool Manager and NWRSC Executive Coordinator. 

 

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS: 

Minimum of 15 years or age 

Current National Lifeguard certificate (Lifesaving Society)- Pool Option (with valid recertification) 

CPR C with AED (with valid recertification) 

Standard First Aid (with valid recertification) 

 

ASSET QUALIFICATIONS: 

Pool Operators- Level 1 and 2 (RFABC courses) 

WHMIS 

Lifesaving Aquatic Supervisor Training/ Certification 

Supervision Evaluation and Enhancement (SEE course) 

Water Safety Instructor (or equivalent experience)

HOURS OF WORK: 

Must be willing to work a flexible work schedule, including weekends and evenings.
