This is aquatic leadership work in assisting a superior in directing the provision of aquatic instructional and recreational programs in a multi- purpose aquatic facility on an assigned shift. An incumbent of this class supervises, checks and participates in the work of a moderate sized group of full-time and part-time subordinates engaged in instructional, lifeguarding, maintenance, custodial and clerical/cashiering tasks. The Aquatic Leader 1 is responsible for ensuring that all pumps, filters, chlorinators and related water treatment equipment are properly functional, and that established standards of cleanliness and safety are enforced. In addition, the incumbent participates in program development and promotion, and while independence of judgement and action is exercised with respect to matters of a routine nature, difficult or unusual problems are referred to a superior who reviews work performance on the basis of effectiveness of services rendered and conformance with established policies and procedures. Prepares and maintains a variety of records and reports related to the work. Performs other related work as required.
Qualifications include completion of Grade 12, supplemented by courses in lifesaving, lifeguarding, aquatics instruction and pool operation and maintenance plus sound related experience including some supervisory experience or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Sound knowledge of the theory and practice of lifesaving, lifeguarding cardio-pulmonary resuscitation and first aid; and teaching methods and group leadership techniques emphasizing instruction in water safety and aquatic skills. Working knowledge of pool chemistry, water filtration, chlorination, heating and related pool equipment and operating procedures; and principals and practices involved in implementing, evaluation, organization and offering instructional and recreational aquatic programs. The ability to participate in the planning, organization and promotion of instructional and recreational aquatic programs; participate in hiring, training and evaluating the work performance of subordinates engaged in instructional and lifeguarding tasks; and deal effectively and courteously with staff, public and user groups. The following are required for the position: Water Safety Instructor Award, Life Saving Instructor Award, National Lifeguard Award, Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation - Level C Certificate, B.C.R.P.A Basic Fitness Leader – Aquafitness, and Driver’s License for the Province of British Columbia. 

This is a Temporary Full Time position until March 23, 2021.
