The City of Port Coquitlam’s Recreation Department is currently seeking an enthusiastic, motivated, creative, fun and energetic individual to join our team as a Recreation Specialist - Aquatics to work in our indoor and outdoor pools, including working at the new Port Coquitlam Community Centre. The successful applicant will support the Recreation Program Coordinator (Aquatics) and/or Area Recreation Manager in operating all aquatic facilities, supervising staff, recruiting instructors, designing, planning and organizing approved aquatic programs and activities.

The Lifeguard Instructor I or II, under the direction of the Aquatic Leaders, works independently, assumes responsibility and takes initiative to complete duties related to pool filtration, chemistry, lifeguarding, instructing, administration and special events. The incumbent maintains a positive, professional, customer service approach. Preference will be put into hiring a Lifeguard Instructor II.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Aptitude in customer service – Successful candidate will focus on improving client experience and manage complaints in a respectful and professional manner;
  • Time management – Successful candidate can establish priorities to meet deadlines in order to carry out multiple tasks or projects at the same time
  • Decision Making - Ability to prioritize decisions and make on spot decisions with minimal direction

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Supervise the activities of all participants and guests, providing direction regarding appropriate conduct
  • Perform lifeguarding, first aid and maintenance duties in accordance with associated governing bodies
  • Organize, instruct and review aquatic lessons, programs and special events
  • Maintain and troubleshoot the chemistry and filtration of all aquatic facilities
  • Prepare and submit reports, evaluations and statistical information
  • Complete administrative duties
  • Perform other duties as required

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE & EDUCATION

Lifeguard/Instructor 1 ($25.82):

  • National Lifeguard Service Award
  • Red Cross Water Safety Instructor Certification
  • BCRPA Pool Operator Level 1
  • Occupational First Aid and CPR-C with AED
  • RCMP criminal Record Check including vulnerable sector check
  • 750 hours of Lifeguarding and 500 hours of instruction experience (Based on 1 year of Lifeguard and instructing experience and experience assisting in special events)

Lifeguard/Instructor 2 ($30.93), in addition to the above:

  •  Lifesaving Society Instructor Certification
  • Aqua Fitness Instructor Certification (CALA preferred)

REQUIRED SKILLS & ABILITIES

  • Experience in planning, supervising and evaluating programs and events
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the public, internal and external agencies, and address varied audiences on topics related to aquatic facilities and programs
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and adapt within a dynamic environment
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Proficiency in computer software programs, Microsoft Office, etc.

FITNESS REQUIREMENT

  • The successful applicant will be required to meet all physical standards of the Lifesaving Society’s National Lifeguard Service Award every two months.

As the successful candidate you will ensure a safe and enjoyable leisure experience for patrons while performing lifeguarding and instructional activities. Your training and keen eye for detail will allow you to actively respond to emergency situations by performing rescue functions and providing assistance to patrons in need. Your strong communication and relationship building skills will be essential as you provide instruction in a variety of aquatic and related programs. In addition, you will conduct regular inspections of rescue and emergency equipment, monitor pool chemistry as required and perform assigned janitorial and maintenance tasks as required.

To be considered for this position you must have the following certifications:

  • Red Cross Water Safety Instructor
  • National Lifeguard (Pool Option)
  • CPR Level C with AED  - (annual recertification required for employment)

As an experienced lifeguard with your NLS-Pool Option and CPR-Level C certification, you will provide service at the Parkinson Recreation Centre pool, City Waterpark and Ben Lee Waterpark to facilitate a safe and enjoyable aquatic experience.  Schedule flexibility is a must as you would cover weekends, mornings, afternoons and/or evening swims for up to 25 hours a week.
A successful Criminal Records Check is required. This is a CUPE bargaining unit position and offers an hourly rate starting at $19.58 with a 5-step progression to $25.89 (plus 14% in lieu of benefits, vacation, statutory holidays, and premiums).
A WSI certification, aqua fitness certifiction, and/or other advanced instructor certifications are considered assets and may provide additional opportunities for part-time work as a Lifeguard/Lessons Instructor.

Aquatic Guard 1's

Job Description: 

The Mission Leisure Centre is seeking energetic and motivated individuals with excellent interpersonal and communications skills to fill part-time and auxiliary Aquatic Guard I positions.

You will be responsible for guarding duties, teaching Red Cross swimming lessons and performing maintenance duties in the pool area. Aquatic Guards must enjoy interacting with children and adults and be able to effectively deal with disruptive behavior.

The successful candidates will be at least 16 years of age and hold current NLS, CPR and Water Safety Instructor certifications.

In order to be considered for employment as an Aquatic Guard, candidates must be available to participate in a wet exam scheduled for Sunday, November 24, 2019 from 8:00 am to 10:00 am.

The 2019 rate of pay for this CUPE position is $25.14 per hour plus a percentage in lieu of all benefits. Aquatic Guards must be available for shifts anytime between the hours of 5:15 am and 10:00 pm including evenings, weekends and some statutory holidays.
