Reporting to the Manager, Aquatics, this position involves either instructing classes for children and adults in all levels of swimming and/or performing normal lifeguard duties dependent on relevant certifications.  In addition, in this role the incumbent will perform, basic pool maintenance, and cleaning. 

Duties include:

  • Plans, organizes, instructs and evaluates swimming classes at all levels.
  • Maintains related class and course records.
  • Performs normal lifeguard duties.
  • Carries out assigned janitorial and minor preventative maintenance tasks.
  • Tests and adjusts water quality in swimming pools including adding chemicals.
  • All persons employed by the City of Vernon will be required to assist the City in providing emergency services.  Duties assigned during an emergency may differ from regular duties.

 

Required Education and Experience:

  • Holder of a current CPR Level C.
  • Holder of a current Red Cross Water Safety Instructors Certification and/or a current National Lifeguard Certification (Pool Option).

 

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Demonstrated people person with emerging coaching abilities. 
  • Solid communications and interpersonal skills to work effectively in a team environment and with the public.
  • Knowledgeable in normal pool maintenance.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain an acceptable Vulnerable Sector Check.

 

Preferred Education and Experience:

  • Completion of Grade 12.
  • Pool Operators Certificate Level I.

SUMMER AQUATIC DAYCAMP LEADER
 
UBC Aquatic Centre Day Camps are looking for Summer (Tuesday July 2nd – Friday August 30th, 2018) Play and Swim Camp Leaders who have experience working with children (ages 5 to 14 years) in a camp setting with specialty interests in either Aquatics or General Sports. Camps run between 9am and 4pm for a 7 hour day.  This position requires leaders to be wet and in the water directly supervising and engaging campers.  Instructors will be responsible for: program implementation, supervising groups of youth (ages 5-14 years), teaching swimming skills, delivering recreational activities for children in the water, outside and in the classroom, and assisting with the organization of games and activities.
 
Remuneration:  $17 per hour plus 4% in lieu of benefits.
 
SPECIFIC DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Implementing and instructing activities/sports/crafts
  • Supervising camp participants (ages ranging from 5-14)
  • Ensuring safety of all camp participants
  • Signing in and out camp participants
  • Escorting campers to and from campus facilities, off sight venues and local playgrounds
  • Takes direction from a Senior Daycamp Leader and/or Daycamp Supervisor
     

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience working with children in group settings
  • Strong customer service skills
  • Aquatic specific knowledge & skills an asset
  • Outgoing and enthusiastic personality
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Ability to produce a current criminal record check
  • Valid Standard First-Aid/CPR Certification
  • Water Safety Instructor (WSI) Certification

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • National Lifeguard (NL) Certification
  • Lifesaving Instructor
  • Experience in Water Sports(Synchronized Swimming, Water Polo, Competitive Swimming)
