A little bit about you:

You will have completed: Bronze Cross, have current Standard First Aid and CPR, Level C/Automated External Defibrillator (AED).

Sasamat Outdoor Centre is currently looking for a Waterfront Director for our 2019 summer season!! The Water Front Director is responsible for the general day-to-day operation, safety, and supervision of Sasamat’s beautiful waterfront located on Lake Sasamat. The camps waterfront offers several different and fun activities including kayaking, canoeing, snorkelling, swimming, and more!

Sasamat is a residential and day camp based summer camp in Belcarra BC, just outside of Port Moody. Sasamat prides itself on its engaging and supportive community where children are made to feel included in the camp culture and nature. This supportive and fun environment allows for campers to try new activities and develop new skills with the help of caring staff. Sasamat has a full range of exciting summer camp activities from Our high Ropes course and archery field, to canoeing and kayaking at our beautiful waterfront located on Lake Sasamat.

  Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Responsible for the management of waterfront staff and supervision of all waterfront programs. The Waterfront Director will ensure a high level of programming and safety at all times.
  2. In collaboration with the Summer Camp and Outdoor Education Director and the summer camp Director Team.

a.)Plan and deliver required staff training components

b.)Pro-actively identify and solve problems and areas of concern for staff, campers and volunteers

3.    In collaboration with the Summer camp director team

                 a.)Actively participate in planning and delivering summer staff training

b.)Greetand welcome all campers, staff and volunteers each day at the waterfront

c.)Relieve counsellors as required in evenings

d.)Remain visible and accessible to staff and campers

6.     Report all accidents/incidents to the Summer Camp and Outdoor Education Director/ Executive Director

7.     Maintain high levels of staff morale and conduct by providing mentorship and support to staff and volunteers

Staff Training

  • In collaboration with the rest of the camps coordinator team; plan and deliver required staff training components to Group Leaders and summer staff
  • To participate in 100% of pre-season staff training
  • To know and practice the information covered in the "Policies & Procedures" section of manual.  (Failure to comply could result in discipline including dismissal.)

Supervision and Direction

  • Provide leadership and positive role modeling to staff
  • Provide leadership and coordination in case of waterfront emergencies
  • Supervise program staff designated to the waterfront (lifeguards, canoe instructors, program staff)
  • Manage weekly schedules
  • Conduct one-on-one staff appraisals (in attendance with Summer Camp and Outdoor Education Director) and provide written evaluations
  • In collaboration with Wellness Director, coordinate volunteer schedules and conduct volunteer appraisals
  • Consult with parents when required
  • Ensure all boats and equipment are maintained, clean, and in good working order
  • Provide a written end-of-season report detailing specific observations, general recommendations and an inventory of waterfront equipment

Risk Management

  • Implement and maintain risk management systems in keeping with camping industry best practices and provincial regulations
  • Conduct a daily inspection of waterfront emergency equipment to ensure all is in place and good order
  • Conduct a daily inspection of waterfront area to ensure it is free of hazards
  • Ensure Sasamat Outdoor Centre waterfront policies are being followed

Program Development

  • To develop early morning “Polar Bear” dip option for campers
  • To develop evening residential camper swim programs

Other Duties

  • The Waterfront Director may be asked to assist in duties not listed above. Sasamat Outdoor Centre expects the support of all staff members ensuring that the summer camp runs smoothly and is the best that it can be.

Job Purpose:

The Waterfront Instructor will also help with the facilitation of waterfront activities, including set-up, take down and instruction where needed. The Waterfront Instructor is an integral member of the program staff team and when there is no activity on the waterfront, the Waterfront Instructor will be re-assigned to assist in another program area.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Staff Training

Reporting to the Manager, Recreation and Operations, the Athletic and Recreation department at SAIT is looking for a dynamic individual with a passion for recreation. As the Team Lead, you’ll coordinate the busy aquatic centre; multi-tasking to oversee the office environment and its operations.

  • Coordinate SAIT’s Red Cross swim lesson & Lifesaving Society Aquatic Leadership programs; organizing course materials and preparing the facility for each swim lesson intake and course delivery
  • Attend to all inquiries including those received via phone, email, or walk-in; welcoming, trouble-shooting, and providing information on programs, facilities, bookings, and general information 
  • Create and administer the staff and aquatic schedules 
  • Facilitate and deliver quarterly staff meetings 
  • Assist with hiring aquatic personnel
  • Organize and complete all swim lesson instructor and lifeguard contracts on behalf of the Aquatic department
  • Coordinate and book aquatic rental requests, meeting the groups requirements
  • Track facility rental revenues on a quarterly and annual basis
  • Deliver a comprehensive pool maintenance program; maintaining standards that meet and exceed those set out by SAIT and Alberta Health Services

Qualifications

  • Security Clearance with vulnerable Sector search mandatory. Current within the last three months
  • 2 years’ experience working in post-secondary education; Office Administration or Recreational Management. Previous experience within SAIT would be considered an asset 
  • 3 years related aquatic supervision experience
  • RFP Level II pool operations or Advanced Pool Operations certificate
  • Current Certifications for:
    • National Lifeguard award (NLS)
    • Water Safety Instructor award (WSI)
    • Standard First aid and CPR level C 
    • Automated External Defibrillator (AED) 
    • WHMIS
