NLI Bridges Program

The NLI Bridges program allows National Lifeguard Instructors  and National Lifeguard Instructor Trainers who have not attended an NLI Recertification in the last 5 years to recertify. Contact the Branch office if you are interesting in doing the NLI Bridges program.

Any NL Instructor or Instructor Trainer who is within 5 years from the date of issue can recertify by attending an NL Instructor Recertification.

Any NL Instructor or Instructor Trainer who is within 5-10 years from the date of issue can recertify by completing the following steps:

Option 1

  • Take the NL Instructor full course (32 hours) again (to include recertifying prerequisite courses if applicable, purchase a full NLI Kit at the time of registration and complete the apprenticeship requirements).

Option 2 (Bridges)

  • Purchase the Bridges package to include the National Lifeguard Award Guide, Alert Manual, NL Pool & Waterpark Candidate Workbook and Bridges guide.
  • Recertify NL Pool (8 hours), then attend an NL Instructor Recert (5 hours).
  • NLIs will be required to apprentice on 1 NL Pool full course
  • NLITs will be required to apprentice on 1 NLI full course once reappointed as a National Lifeguard Instructor.
  • Submit the completed Bridges package to the Branch office for review and approval - keep a copy for your records!

Any NL Instructor or Instructor Trainer who is more than 10 years past the date of issue will be required to take the National Lifeguard Instructor course again.
