Position Summary
The Lifeguard-Instructor performs as a professional team player in providing the best aquatic recreational service to the community.
Under the direction of the Head Guard, Head Instructor and/or designate, the Lifeguard-Instructor provides supervision and performs lifeguard and instructional duties to ensure patron safety. The Lifeguard-Instructor provides supervision of the entire aquatic area (pools, deck, changerooms, steam room, sauna, gym, and viewing areas) as well as aid with the operation and delivery on aquatic and recreation programs, swim meets, and special events. The Lifeguard-Instructor is positive and responsive when dealing with the public and user groups, including varsity, sport and/or club teams, the National Swim Center, student users, rental groups, and members of the community. They will perform a variety of custodial and facility maintenance tasks, and possess a basic knowledge of pool chemistry and operating procedures. Shift work is required for this position, including mornings, evenings, and weekends.
Duties and Responsibilities
o Performs lifeguarding and instructional duties
o Performs custodial, operational, and maintenance tasks
o Performs administrative duties as assigned, including but not limited to, completing pertinent reports and records regarding swim classes, facility operations, water chemistry, and bather safety
o Promotes aquatic safety and ensures that patrons act in compliance with all rules and regulations governing the operations of the aquatic area.
o Accepts, handles, and assists the public with any enquiries and/or complaints in a respectful, courteous, and tactful manner; forwards items that cannot be resolved to the Supervisor.
o Provides assistance with the operation and delivery of aquatic and recreation programs, swim meets, and special events
o Knowledgeable about WorkSafeBC and B.C Health Act regulations and ensures minimum requirements are being met.
o Reports all safety hazards, mechanical problems etc. immediately to the Supervisor
o Attends and performs all skills related to each scheduled Inservice training session, at the start of each term
o Physically capable and fully versed in the aquatic area emergency procedures and prepared to take command in an emergency situation
o Follows UBC Aquatic Centre policies and procedures and expectations for staff conduct while presenting a professional image of the facility and UBC Athletics and Recreation
o Fills Lifeguarding and Instructing shift vacancies as required.
o Performs other duties as assigned
Required Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills
o Knowledge and/or experience in lifeguarding, instruction, and first aid
o Knowledge and/or experience in pool chemistry and maintenance
o Knowledge and/or experience in pool administration, organizational, oral and written skills
o Working knowledge of the rules and regulations governing public safety in swimming pools
o Projects a professional appearance
o Demonstrates initiative, sound judgement, positive attitude, and responsiveness when dealing with the public, user groups, and staff
o Ability to maintain confidentiality and be discrete
o Sufficient physical and mental stamina to perform in emergency situations
o Maintains a level of physical fitness, stamina, and knowledge required to perform all lifeguard and instructional duties
Required Qualifications
o Current National Lifeguard Award – Pool Option (NL)
o Current Standard First Aid or equivalent
o Current CPR-C and AED (recert annually)
o Current Lifesaving Swim Instructor
o Current criminal record check (current within 2 years)
o Grade 12 Diploma, GED, or are in school
o Minimum 16 years of age
Preferred Skills and Qualifications
o Previous Lifeguarding and/or Instructional experience
o Holds any of the following Certifications:
o Aquatic Fitness Instructor (BCRPA, WaterArt, CALA)

Job Summary:
Under the direction of the Pool Manager, the Lifeguards are responsible for the effective operation of Kin Pool through the provision of supervision, aquatic programs, and maintenance of the facility, in accordance with policies and directions of the Nanaimo White Rapids Swim Club (NWRSC) Board. This family-centered youth swim club fosters social and skill development focusing on each athlete's personal best in a safe and fun community-based program.
Job Summary:
Lifeguard is responsible for the effective operation of Kin Pool facility through the provision of lifeguarding, aquatic programs, and maintenance of the facility.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Ensure all policies of Lifesaving Society, National Lifeguard Service and Public Health Act Standards are being followed. Ensure pool safety through supervision and public education, enforcing pool rules, effectively responding to emergency situations, carrying out aquatic rescues and performing first aid.
Instruct swimming lessons, providing a safe environment for learning, evaluating swimmers' strokes and skills, and providing effective feedback.
Provide excellent customer service; developing a positive relationship with facility user groups and patrons.
Cashiers for public swims; sets up cashier station for each shift, receives cash, balances float, and prepares cash report.
Maintain cleanliness of bathroom facilities and demonstrates and upholds respect for the facility.
Maintains safety equipment.
Demonstrates and models respect for NWRSC coaches and board; works effectively in partnership with the Head Coach and NWRSC Executive Coordinator.
Takes reasonable care to protect own health and safety and the health and safety of other persons affected by their actions. Ask for training if unfamiliar with the work they are requested to perform, work safely and encourage co-workers to do the same, and report unsafe conditions to the Pool Manager and NWRSC Executive Coordinator.
ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS:
Minimum of 15 years or age
Current National Lifeguard certificate (Lifesaving Society)- Pool Option (with valid recertification)
CPR C with AED (with valid recertification)
Standard First Aid (with valid recertification)
ASSET QUALIFICATIONS:

UBC ATHLETICS AND RECREATION
JOB SUMMARY
Would you like to play a key role in providing life-long memories, improving skill development,
physical activity levels and social skills in young children? UBC Aquatic Summer Camp offerings
include 6 different camps with 120 kids attending each week for 9 weeks.
Working out of the UBC Aquatic Centre, the Day Camp Supervisor reports directly to the Aquatic
Centre Program Manager performing duties of varying complexity. A consistent weekly schedule will
be required.
This role is responsible for assisting in the operations and planning of the UBC Aquatic Centre’s summer day camps. Specific duties include assisting with: marketing; developing and planning activities; creating, managing and compiling administrative forms and stats; overseeing instructional programming; and hiring, training and supervising camp instructors and volunteers.
The position will also support the Aquatic Centre Program Manager and Camp Leaders with
program logistics, the evaluation of programming and instructors, and the day to day requirements
of the camps.
Part time/Flexible – June 10ᵗʰ – July 1ˢᵗ
Full Time (35 hrs/week) – July 2ⁿᵈ – August 30ᵗʰ
Pay range: $23.50 per hour depending on experience and/or qualifications 4% in lieu of vacation
pay.
DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES
In cooperation with the Aquatic Centre Program Manager, the successful candidate will:
• Assume a leadership role in the operation and delivery of camp programs.
• Maintain active involvement in the operation and delivery of camp programs.
• Support the implementation of a successful marketing strategy to ensure high levels of camp
enrollment.
• Supervise and evaluate camp instructors.
• Assist with the administrative duties and stats compilation.
• Assist with the training and supervision of Camp Leaders and Volunteers.
• Assist in instructional programming and daily camp operations.
• Respond to parent questions and concerns to ensure customer satisfaction.
• Ensure programs have appropriate supplies and run efficiently.
• Perform other duties as necessary.
This role is integral to the operations and goals of UBC Aquatic Centre Day Camps, including
excellence in programming, community development, and customer service. The role will provide front
line services to community members, particularly parents and children. It is absolutely necessary
that the successful candidate work as a strong role model among day camp staff. Students working in
this role are required to provide first-class professionalism and
customer service while performing duties.
QUALIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

ORGANIZATIONAL STATUS
Reports to the UBC Aquatic Centre Program Manager. Interacts with other department, campus,
community groups and agencies. Provides supervision of Camp Leaders.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
The position receives direction and mentorship from the UBC Aquatic Centre Program Manager. The
position works under direct supervision both independently and in a team environment.
The employee works under a set of policies and procedures and is expected to defer to the
supervisor when any judgment or decision making outside these parameters is required. The role
maintains regular contact with the supervisor through email, phone and in-person interactions.
SUPERVISION GIVEN
This position assists with training and supervising Camp Leaders with the guidance of the Program
Manager. The Day Camp Supervisor will act as a leader and assist camp staff in providing an
exceptional day camp experience for all participants.
TRAINING AND ORIENTATION
All staff will receive the following training:
• Facility tour and orientation
• Job specific orientation
• In-person training/mentoring assistance from supervisor
• Opportunity to attend Access and Diversity training workshops on equity and inclusivity
• Opportunity to train with other Athletics and Recreation Camp programs and leaders
NETWORKING AND MENTORSHIP OPPORTUNITIES
• Build a client base and relationships with frequent registrants in the UBC Camps program.
• Work alongside UBC camp leaders and administration in a professional environment.
• Opportunity to interact with parents and children in an educational, activity-based setting.
• Working with other camp department staff, leaders, programmers and managers.
SUPPORT AND EVALUATION
• End of camp season, a 1 on 1 evaluation with supervisor.
• Goal setting and review sessions with supervisor.
• Complete a 1 on 1 end of camp evaluation of leaders.
WORK PLACE SKILL AND PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT
By September 2024, the Day Camp Supervisor will have gained:
• Successfully lead and deliver the Aquatic Centre program for Spring and Summer
• Enhanced computer skills and experience with Perfect Mind Registration Software
• Experience working with the public and developing effective interpersonal skills with
participants to provide the best customer service possible and be able to respond to their needs in
a timely manner
• Effective time management skills by learning how to prioritize tasks, use time efficiently and be
well organized in order to finish tasks and assignments on time
• Experience using verbal and written communication styles in a professional setting and the
ability to adapt to different audiences and ages
• Ability to take initiative and work independently, demonstrating effective problem solving skills
and attention to detail
• Experience working with parents and children in an activity-based and conflict resolution setting
