Steps to Lifeguarding

Individuals wishing to become certified lifeguards are required to complete the following levels. Please note that facilities may also require lifeguards to hold additional certifications [such as Lifesaving Instructor and First Aid] in order to be considered for both part-time and full-time aquatic positions.

The Lifesaving Society recommends that individuals contact their potential employer for complete details and certifications required to apply for aquatic positions.

	COURSE	PRE-REQUISITES
1	Bronze Star	Ability to swim
2	Bronze Medallion	Ability to swim 13 years old [by exam date] or Bronze Star
3	Bronze Cross	Bronze Medallion by first day of course [does not need to be current]
4	Aquatic Emergency Care or Standard First Aid
5	National Lifeguard Service Award [core and pool option]	16 years old [by exam date] Bronze Cross [does not need to be current] Standard First Aid or AEC[current within two years]

Since 1994, the DB Perks & Associates & Lifesaving Society Scholarship Program has been helping eligible lifeguards and instructors pursue post secondary education in BC and the Yukon. Apply for 1 of 4 $500 scholarships - applications - are due January 31, 2011
