Date on Cards
All cards indicate a certification date rather than an expiry date.
Currency
Some certifications are required to be current in order to satisfy employment requirements or to show as pre-requisites for higher level training. Please refer to each program page for details on the length of time that each award is deemed to be current. Please note that the Lifesaving Society does not grant extensions to any certification.
Cards Issued by Facilities (Instant Awards)
As cards for some levels are pre-purchased through the instant-award system, facilities are required to fill in the candidate's name and date of issue for each successful individual. These cards may be handprinted, typed or printed by computer.
Cards Issued by the Branch Office
Certification cards for Bronze Star, Bronze Medallion, Bronze Cross, NLS, Lifesaving Instructor and most First Aid courses are sent directly to the individual within 2 weeks of the test sheets being received at the Branch Office. If your temporary card has expired, and you have not received your card, please contact the branch.
Responsibility of the Card-holder
The card-holder is responsible for:
- Ensuring that their awards are current (if required for employment or as a pre-requisite).
- Ensuring that their cards are kept in a secure location (not a wallet).
- Presenting their cards as proof of pre-requisite at any appropriate Lifesaving Society course or recertification.
Lost or Stolen Cards
Cards that are either lost or stolen, can be replaced by applying for an award search through the Branch Office. There is a nominal fee for this service.
International Award Transfers
Candidates holding certifications from other countries must be directed to the Branch office before participating in any course training (including NLS, First Aid and Bronze programs).
After the Branch assesses a candidate’s international certifications and determines their Canadian training options, they will receive a letter that – if they have been authorized to skip certain prerequisites – directs them to present it to an instructor in lieu of presenting prerequisite wallet card(s).
