Nature & Scope:                 

The Lifeguard/Swim Instructor will report to the Aquatics Supervisor & Supervisor of Children’s Programs and work collaboratively with other members of the YMCA team to provide a safe and fun aquatics environment. 

Major Responsibilities:

  • Guard the pool and teach swimming lessons in a positive and professional manner
  • Build meaningful relationships through positive daily interaction with YMCA members, visitors, and colleagues
  • Promote philanthropy through the YMCA’s annual Strong Kids Campaign
  • Develop lesson plans for various programs and administer progressive evaluations for participants 
  • Ensure program design, lay-out, and offerings meet the needs of all participants at various levels
  • Lead program delivery, while ensuring contents meet the appropriate criteria and outline
  • Perform general administrative duties and record keeping responsibilities
  • Maintain an atmosphere of achievement that inspires self and others to succeed at the highest levels
  • Ensure the safety of all members, participants, staff, and property by following YMCA standards/policies/procedures and ensuring they are maintained amongst all members and staff, including all locker rooms and spectator viewing areas.
  • Maintain a neat, orderly, and clean environment, including all program areas, common spaces, and washrooms
  • Assist with training new staff/volunteers in procedures and practices
  • Remain flexible – willing to learn new skills, alter shifts
  • Attend staff meetings, planning sessions and training events as required
  • Maintain regular attendance, punctuality and be appropriately dressed and well groomed

 

Requirements:

  • Current Standard First Aid certificate (valid within 2 years)
  • CPR level C and & AED certificate (valid within 1 year)
  • Current National Lifeguard – pool option
  • Experience as a Lifeguard or Swimming Instructor - preferred
  • YMCA Aquatic Fitness Certificate, or equivalent - preferred
  • Advanced leadership courses are an asset
  • Demonstrated high level of customer service skills
  • Successful candidates will be required to provide a current and satisfactory Criminal Reference Check/Vulnerable Sector Search issued no later than six (6) months preceding your start date

Nature & Scope:

The Aquatics Supervisor reports to the Aquatics Manager and works collaboratively with all YMCA staff and volunteers. The successful applicant will lead the Chilliwack Family YMCA Aquatics staff team with a primary focus on aquatics programming and maintaining a safe aquatic environment. The Aquatics Supervisor will be responsible for delivering on our vision of building a community in which a generation of children and families reach their full potential.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Present a safe aquatic environment by ensuring the aquatic staff follow the aquatic safety plan and all relevant policies and procedures
  • Develop and implement strategies that achieve and sustain program growth for aquatic programming.
  • Ensure a safe aquatic environment through the hiring, supervision and training of lifeguards, instructors and volunteers.
  • Role model service standards and provide leadership through direct service delivery, with a focus on program quality and participant engagement.
  • Work in conjunction with the Health & Fitness, and Child & Youth departments to ensure program convenience and access for all members of the family.
  • Progressively evaluate and adjust current programming to meet the needs of YMCA members.
  • Lead a team of approximately 30 staff and volunteers.
  • Provide key leadership on the implementation of the YMCA’s seven priority service standards of: convenience; cleanliness and maintenance of facilities and equipment; safety; friendly and welcoming; building positive relationships; and ensure staff/volunteers are engaged and knowledgeable.
  • Manage to targets in annual operating plans and budgets.

  • Current Standard First Aid (valid within 2 yrs)
  • Current CPR C/AED (valid within 1 yr)
  • Current YMCA Swim Instructor or equivalent

Fall Waterfront Instructor

The Waterfront Instructor provides the expertise, experience and skills required for the safety of campers participating in all waterfront activities. The Waterfront Instructor will lifeguard swimmers and boaters on the water at all times.
