Job Summary:

The incumbent supervisors pool attendees and limited staff, instructs aquatic lifesaving, and first aid courses, provides support of administrative and supervisory staff, provides emergency care in minor and major first aid situations, tests water and assists with the development and implementation of in service and aquatic programs.

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Under the direction of the Aquatic Supervisor, organizes, trains, and orientates staff and volunteers on their shift, contributes to recruitment, performance appraisals and disciplinary action for Aquatic Staff.
  • Monitors the pool users and enforces standards of conduct and decorum, responds minor and major emergency first aid situations, and responds to enquires from public.
  • Prepares and implements lesson plans and instructional material for various aquatic, lifesaving, and first aid courses, including candidate progress reports, preparing and maintaining statistical reports/records and maintaining data bases.
  • Under the direction of the Aquatic Supervisor assists with the development and implementation of in-service training, program activities and special events.
  • Researches and purchases aquatic and first supplies and assists with maintaining inventory of these supplies.
  • Maintains a professional image to the public and ensures all interaction with public in the aquatic centre is conducted in a professional way.
  • Performs limited custodial maintenance and minor repairs to the aquatic facility and equipment.
  • Performs water tests, recognizes and reports any problems.
  • Under the direction of the Aquatic Super visor, submits information for promotional material including the Active Living Guide.
  • Acts as Aquatic Supervisor as assigned.
  • Functions as the “Canada Games Centre Supervisor on Duty” on weekends and evenings, as assigned.

 

This position contains elements necessary for identification and evaluation of the job.  The incumbent may be required to perform other related duties.

 

Working Conditions:

Frequent exposure to a hot humid environment, loud noises, some exposure to dirt and bodily fluids.

 

Required Knowledge, Skill and Abilities:

  • Completion of Grade 12
  • 2 years of Lifeguard and Instructor experience
  • NLS Pool option
  • I Can Swim Teacher
  • Lifesaving Society Instructor
  • Standard First Aid
  • CPR Basic Rescuer
  • Pool Operator Level 1
  • 2 of the following awards: I Can Swim Teacher Course Conductor, Aquafit Instructor certification, NLS Instructor, LS Instructor Trainer, First Aid/CPR Instructor
  • Demonstrated instructor, supervisory, decision –making and interpersonal skills

An equivalent combination of education, training and experience may be considered.

 

Examples of Equipment to Operate:

First Aid equipment, audio visual equipment, computer with applications such as Outlook, Word, CLASS, ERP, Windows, and Excel, digital photography programs, City Vehicle, water test kits.

As an Aquatic Leader, you will have the opportunity to provide a safe and enjoyable leisure experience and will be responsible for providing lifeguarding and instruction for a variety of aquatic programs at our facilities.  Casual status requires flexibility in scheduling and the desire to work a variety of shifts, often on short notice. Hours of work varies from 5:30am to 10:30pm, 7 days a week.

 

To be considered, you are required to have the follow current certifications:

•             NL – Pool Option

•             Standard First Aid with CPR Level C

•             Water Safety Instructor

 

Our recruitment process has five steps.  Here are the timelines you must be available:

1.       Application:Due November 3, 2017.  Reference “Application Guideline” below. Please remember to include copies of the above noted certifications.

2.       Physical Standards and CPR Demonstration:Must be able to attend a one hour session November 17, November 18, November 19, November 20.  Sessions run in 1 hour timeslots throughout the day.

3.       Group Interview & WSI Peer Teach:  Must be able to attend a three hour session between November 21, November 22 and November 23.  Sessions run from 3:30-6:30pm.

4.       NL Simulations and Spinal Demonstration:Must be able to attend a three hour session on either November 29 or November 30.  Sessions run from 3:30-6:30pm.

5.       Criminal Records Search and Reference Checks:  Will be completed between December 1 and December 8. Formal job offers to follow.

Aquatic Leader 101:We are offering a course named Aquatic Leader 101 on Fridays from October 20 until November 3 from 7:30-10pm. Our goal is that participants will gain a better understanding of the roles and responsibilities of an Aquatic Leader, collect some tools to help make them a strong and successful candidate as they move forward in the field of recreation. The City of Burnaby has eight (4 indoor and 4 outdoor) pools. Indoor pools can be found at Bonsor Recreation

Complex, CG Brown Pool, Eileen Dailly Leisure Pool and Edmonds Community Centre; seasonal outdoor pools are located at Central Park, Kensington Park, MacPherson Park, and Robert Burnaby Park.

Some of the duties of a Lifeguard Instructor Aquatics happen in both the water and on the pool deck, and may

include instructing aquatic programs all ages, water surveillance and rule enforcement, as well as participating in rescues and first aid when required. Other responsibilities include chemical testing of pool water, cleaning the pool and bathrooms, completing reports related to daily tasks, and performing other related duties as required.

 

The following licences and current certifications are required:

 CPR Certificate – Level C (current within 1 year)

 

Aqua Fitness Certificate, AED Certificate, Pool Operator’s Certificate, and valid License for the Province of British Columbia, Class 5, are considered assets.

What Do You Need to Have?

  • You may be fairly new to lifeguarding and swim instruction, but you have your current National Lifeguard (NLS) pool option and Swim Instructor Certification (WSI).
  • You’re also up-to-date with a current Standard First Aid certificate (valid within 2 years) and CPR level C and & AED certificate (valid within 1 year).
