Responsibilities

We are currently looking for BCRPA or CALA Aquafit Instructors that are able to teach:

  • Shallow Water Aquafit
  • Deep Water Aquafit
  • Low Impact Aquafit
    • Aqua Zumba
    • Aquamat classes
    • Aqua Cycling classes

Qualifications

  • Successful candidates will be a BCRPA Registered Aquatic Fitness Instructor with a current CPR-C including AED certification;
  • Additional training or certification in Older Adult, Osteofit, Pre-Post-Natal, and Adaptive Fitness is an asset;
  • A practical demonstration of skills will be a required component of the screening process.

We are currently looking instructors who are able to teach one or more of our morning Aquatic Fitness Classes:

  • Monday – Saturday: 7am class
  • Monday – Friday: 8:45-9:45am class
  • Monday, Wednesday, Friday: 11:45am class

The City of Burnaby has eight (4 indoor and 4 outdoor) pools. Indoor pools can be found at Bonsor Recreation Complex, CG Brown Pool, Eileen Dailly Leisure Pool and Edmonds Community Centre; seasonal outdoor pools are located at Central Park, Kensington Park, MacPherson Park, and Robert Burnaby Park. If you enjoy being in the water and are looking for an exciting auxiliary job as a Lifeguard Instructor Aquatics and enjoy working with people around swimming pools as part of a winning team, we’re looking for you!

Some of the duties of a Lifeguard Instructor Aquatics happen in both the water and on the pool deck, and may include instructing aquatic programs all ages, water surveillance and rule enforcement, as well as participating in rescues and first aid when required. Other responsibilities include chemical testing of pool water, cleaning the pool and bathrooms, completing reports related to daily tasks, and performing other related duties as required.

 

The following licences and current certifications are required:

• Red Cross Water Safety Instructor Certificate

• Lifesaving Society Instructor Certificate

• National Lifeguard Service Award

• CPR Certificate – Level C (current within 1 year)

Aqua Fitness Certificate, AED Certificate, Pool Operator’s Certificate and valid License for the Province of British Columbia, Class 5, are considered assets.

 

Please note that a major factor in our hiring decision is your availability to work available shifts as per operational requirements. Successful candidates will need to be in the water as required.


If your application is shortlisted, you must attend a potential three day evaluation of your lifeguarding skills on May 4, 5, and 6. Please note there are no alternate dates. Those passing the wet-screening process must attend an interview shortly thereafter (dates to be determined), and those successful in the interview must attend a mandatory orientation (dates to be determined).

 

Wage: $22.98 per hour with 12% paid in lieu of benefits (Pay Grade 13).

As an Aquatic Leader, you will have the opportunity to provide a safe and enjoyable leisure experience and will be responsible for providing lifeguarding and instruction for a variety of aquatic programs at our facilities.  Casual status requires flexibility in scheduling and the desire to work a variety of shifts, often on short notice.Hours of work varies from 5:30am to 10:30pm, 7 days a week.

 

To be considered, you are required to have the follow current certifications:

  • NL – Pool Option
  • Standard First Aid with CPR Level C
  • Water Safety Instructor

 

Our recruitment process has five steps.  Here are the timelines you must be available:

Aquatic Leader 101:We are offering a course named Aquatic Leader 101 on Fridays from April 6 until April 20, 2018. This optional course will provide potential candidates with the most up to date techniques used in lifeguarding, first aid, aquatic instruction, plus provide best practices used in the aquatic industry. Our goal is that participants will gain a better understanding of the roles and responsibilities of an Aquatic Leader, collect some tools to help make them a strong and successful candidate as they move forward in the field of recreation.
