Nature of Position:

Reporting directly to the Aquatic Centre Manager, the successful candidate must be a self-motivated individual who: works independently, assumes responsibility, and takes various levels of responsibility for programs, lifeguarding, instructing, clerical and supervising special events.  The successful candidate will enjoy working with the public and possess conflict resolution skills.    

Qualifications (Lifeguard Instructor II)

  • 17 years of Age or Older
  • CPR “C”
  • Standard First Aid or Equivalent
  • Occupational First Aid Level 1
  • National Lifeguard Service Award
  • Red Cross Water Safety Instructors (WSI)
  • Minimum 750 hrs of Lifeguarding and 500 hrs of Teaching
  • Pool Operators Level 1
  • Canadian Lifesaving Instructors
  • Aquafit (CALA Certified or BCRPA)
  •  

Required Knowledge (Lifeguard Instructor II)

  • 1250 hrs of Aquatic Experience
  • Experience in pool filtration and water chemistry
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing with the public and staff in a courteous and efficient manner
  • Answer inquiries relating to recreation services.
  • Knowledge of facility policies and procedures
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing with the public and staff in a courteous and efficient manner
  • Answer inquiries relating to recreation services.

Required knowledge

  • experience in pool filtration and water chemistry troubleshooting

Education

  • Grade 12 or GED
  • Good Reading and Writing Skills
  •  

Skills and ability (Lifeguard / Instructor II)

  • Teach Red Cross Swim Lessons and Canadian Lifesaving Lessons
  • Lesson administration
  • Set-up and run event swims and special events
  • Lifeguard regular and private swim sessions
  • Accurately perform water tests and chemical balancing
  • Ability to follow safe work procedures
  • Must apply the facility rules, policy and procedures
  • Perform pool and equipment maintenance
  • Must be available to teach swimming lessons Monday to Sunday as required
  • Must be able to supervise public of all ages and give direction regarding appropriate conduct while in the recreation facility and make certain of compliance to that direction.
  • Ability to deal with the public and staff in a courteous, tactful, and efficient manner
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills
  • Accurately complete required injury/accident forms
  • Performs clerical duties as required
  • Other related duties as required

Fitness requirement

Must meet National Lifeguard Service Certification Physical Standards (Bi-Monthly)

Ability to perform regular maintenance duties 

Shift and Hours of Work

Permanent part time 24 hrs per week

Shifts will include evenings and weekends.  Monday to Sunday

Salary/Rate Paid per hour

Dependant on Qualifications: $25.18 per hour

This person will also assist with the overall operations of the aquatic facility and staff development.  This person must be highly motivated, able to work independently and employ excellent communication and decision making skills.  This person must be able to troubleshoot chemical and mechanical problems, answer queries and deal appropriately with complaints.
